Bioshock DRM fixed

Is DRM making you unhappy? Well now its futile to worry about it.  2K removes the hated install limits on the PC version of BioShock. Now you don’t have to install anything or patch it up when you buy your copy of Bioshock- it is already done!

They move of fixing Bioshock DRM free has happened earlier than expected. They haven’t done everything right but still this move at-least shows that we can trust them in the long run. Bioshock’s SecuRom -supported copyright protection had created a huge controversy at the time of its release, which led the simultaneous limit of installation from 2 to 5  PC’s  . Thanks for taking away SecuRom. EA should take a note of this.

Call of Duty 5- WWII on its way

COD 4 was an awesome game, it truly was. The game made a very positive impression on gamers and critics alike. The game was set in modern warfare and has sold over 10 million units, making it one of the most successful games in the genre. Setting such high benchmarks is a double edged sword, this makes the next game in the series highly anticipated and open to comparisons with the predecessor.

COD- World at War is the next installment in the series and it has bounced back to its WWII roots. The WWII genre has reached its peak and the plethora of games coming out every year, isnt making it any better. But COD 5 will use the COD 4 engine and support co-op play. As per a report on Voodoo Extreme:

It all takes place in the Pacific theater (and partially in Russia’s advance into Berlin) says OXM, which all in all was a much grittier and darker conflict that the one in muddy Belgium fields.

Treyarch has had a full extra year over CoD3’s development to make World at War - and it’s using the excellent CoD4 engine, which is plenty of reason to be excited.

“This is a scarier Call of Duty than we’ve ever seen,” Treyarch head Mark Lamir says in the mag.

To help simulate the Japanese’s different style of warfare, Treyarch has completely re-tinkered the enemy AI in World at War. Instead of taking cover and flanking in traditional European battle strategies, the Japanese hide in trees, sneak through the overgrowth and scrabble, katana in hand in violent suicide attacks.

“We figured out early that the Imperial Japanese fought in a different way that was full of suspense,” creative lead Rich Farrelly tells OXM. “From that point we started to skew the game in that direction.”

Excitingly, for the first time in Call of Duty’s campaign 4-player co-op is supported over Xbox Live - and it supports meta game perks as in CoD4’s excellent online mode

Jack Thompson Got Owned. Epic lulz await

Yes you read right, the scourge of gamerkind has finally been smite down by the holy banhammer of the law. Being the verbose bulk of fail that he is, he stormed out of court during his disciplinary hearing as the Judge refused to hear him recite his LOTR -length objection letter as well as arguing about the position of the podium. The court recommends the disbarment of his career for 10 years.

Let me give you a moment to process that, a forty-ish something lawyer arguing about the position of the podium. For more laughs, check out his sincere objection letter here.

Don’t worry Jack, we in India need someone to rein in the censor board. Go for it.

New Crysis Game In The Works

With Crysis’ multiplayer mode being fairly popular around these parts, it was cause for concern when developers Crytek revealed that they have no plans to support the game any further. However there’s good reason behind that, a sequel entitled Crysis Warhead is in the works for consoles (PS3 and 360) and the PC of course.

This will be the second game in what has been planned as a trilogy in the series. And though the first Crysis game was and still is the pinnacle of technical brilliance, we do hope this time around the nice people at Crytek give some loving to other equally important gameplay elements.

BioShock 2 Announced. Mark Down Q4 2009

Yes we’re a little late on this one, but the fine folks at Take-Two have announced that a sequel to the 2007 game of the year, BioShock is on the way for sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009.  It’s being handled by the newly formed 2k Marin Studio. Rumor has it that it will be a prequel to the events of the first game.

With 2 million copies of Bioshock sold, a sequel was inevitable. But since the game was perfect enough to be a stand alone title, we hope that Take-Two manage something just as special, if not better.

Play Team Fortress 2? New Content For You!

The picture you see, is that of the Pyro. One of the more awesome classes in Team Fortress 2 around.

If you’re one of the many who play TF2 , you’ve had your fair share of run-ins with the Pyro. Most of which have ended in a spectacular heap of flames. Though if you’re the type who favors being on the giving, rather than the receiving end , you’re in for a bit of a treat.

While Valve had made good on their promise to release additional content, with specific achievements for each class starting with the Medic, this time everyone’s favorite flame thrower wielding Pyro is set to receive similar treatment soon enough. And as usual, Valve will ensure PC gamers will get this first. It’s good to see that some companies still deem it fit to treat PC gamers with respect.

Konami Gags Metal Gear Solid 4 Reviewers

With the hotly anticipated MGS4 just days away from hitting the stores, reviewers of the game revealed that the publisher, Konami had barred them from speaking about what we already knew. Namely lengthy cut-scenes and a 4.64GB installation. These two things however, seem to be the tip of the iceberg:

According to two anonymous gaming media sources speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Konami representatives asked print reviewers to omit details concerning the cut-scene length and installation size. Moreover, a recently published MGS4 review on IGN UK says that the concessions were made in exchange for a pre-release review.

“In return for letting us play Metal Gear Solid 4 before its release,” wrote IGN UK editor Dave McCarthy. “Konami issued us with a list of things that we’re not allowed to discuss. This list of prohibited topics is pretty long, and even extends as far as several facts that the company itself has already made public.”

Most of these requests are reasonable such as being asked not to talk about the last two levels of Ninja Gaiden 2, popular gaming magazine, Electronic Gaming Monthly has taken offense to the massive barrage of restrictions for MGS4. So much so that they’ve carried a roundtable discussion of the game rather than a regular review.

Is this a sign of things to come or is it just standard industry practices coming to light? Watch this space.

Let the selling out begin: Guitar Hero: Metallica Confirmed

Hot on the heels of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith comes another Guitar Hero title, this time featuring Metallica. Scheduled for release in 2009, the details were uncovered in an SEC filing made by Activision.

While this bodes well for the series commercially, one can’t help but feel that this series is being milked to proportions that would make EA’s usual treatment of their franchises seem normal (NFS: ProStreet anyone?).

“In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms,” the company said in the filing.

The charm of the Guitar Hero series was to play songs from bands you never even heard of rather than bask in the already popular tracks from well-known acts.

According to our sources (the voices in our head) Activision plan to release Guitar Hero: Madonna and Guitar Hero: Britney Spears as soon as possible.

Newsflash: We Gamers Hate Single-Player Games

If  Infogrames president, Phil Harrison is to be believed, gamers don’t want to be entertained with a good single-player game. All we want is something with an online, community component like Halo 3 or World of Warcraft.

“Alone in the Dark is a beautifully crafted single-player adventure game. I don’t think the industry is going to make many more of those,” said Harrison.

“I just don’t think consumers want to be playing games that don’t have some kind of network connectivity to them, or some kind of community embedded in them, or some kind of extension available through downloadable content.”

As a gamer I feel deeply offended by this statement, I guess Mr. Harrison hasn’t heard about BioShock or Grand Theft Auto 4, two games which sold solely based on their awesome single-player experience. And while such a strategy might seem grand for the West, broadband penetration in India isn’t exactly the highest in the world, it is a good thing then that we’ve some local developers coming out with single-player content, no matter how crappy the effort.

Deus Ex Will Soon Be Available For Free

While some of us have had the chance to purchase and play Deus Ex arguably one of the few games that can be said in the same breathe as Half-Life, most people side-stepped a title filled with conspiracies, RPG elements and an extremely well-crafted story.  Luckily for you, subscription-based PC gaming service GameTap announced it will be available for free.

The title will be playable via the service’s free-to-download launcher program, which allows users to browse and download a variety of PC and emulated console games. Those players who don’t shell out the $9.95 per month for the “Gold”-level subscription can expect a 15 second video advertisement to air before each play.

In addition to Deus Ex, GameTap also offers Ion Storm’s Thief: Deadly Shadows and Doublefine’s Psychonauts among some 120 other titles in its free game roster.

And if good games aren’t your thing, you’re sure to find something up to your standards on GameTap.
