Anil Ambani may buy-out New Castle United, yes, it may really happen. If things go according to plan, Rcom may soon own New Castle, an EPL team that has a tremendous following despite not having won any major event for decades. This is a really smart move from Rcom for obvious reasons, let me elaborate:
1) According to a study(2006), about 43 Million over the age of 15 follow the EPL in India.
2) The ADAG group has previously made clear that they intend to focus on providing entertainment at a global level and nothing shouts global like a Reliance Logo on Micheal Owen’s shirt.
3) They already have games based on Manchester United being developed for mobile phones, clearly indicates that they have big plans for the EPL.
Another point that I strongly support is ADAG’s absence in the Indian Premier League. ADAG needed a team in the IPL to further spread its “Big” brand, because we were hooked to our TVs like zombies during the IPL. Although they are trying very hard to be a part of the IPL, technically they can’t join in till 2010. So while brands like Kingfisher and Godrej brainwash you to buy talc and drink beer, Big is left far behind in the IPL. If Anil Ambani was to really buy out New Castle, the tides would change and really push their brand forward.
Zapak would make the most out of the deal, since they are already invested in everything from Flash gaming to Merchandising. Soon you may see flash based soccer games, T-shirts and little Michael Owen action figures. Imagine what this would mean for Indian football, we could actually produce a thoroughbred international footballer in a few years.
Well this may the best thing that happened to Indian Football or just a rumor, here’s hoping its soon a reality. in the meanwhile do enjoy some amazing goals by my personal favorite New Castle player aka Alan Shearer in the video below.
